    Background

Triinu Schneider is a young and active lady who lives on the island of Hiiuma in Kassari. She started acting as a self-employed entrepreneur already in 2003 as a swimming instructor, but she began to produce her apple juice only in 2009. The idea to produce apple juice arose from her family as her father had a really big apple garden and Triinu started to think of a more profitable use of the apples.

    Objective

Triinu aimed to increase the quality of her apple juice products by introducing a better pasteurising process which would make it easier for her to produce juice with a longer shelf life.

    Main activities

A moving squeezer was purchased, which served to press the fruit. This contributed to efficient pasteurisation and production of the organic apple juice. The young entrepreneur offered delivery services throughout Estonia.

    Results & Benefits

The pasteurising device helped the efficiency of fruit processing increased by as much as 500%. It also enhanced competitiveness with big juice producers and provided an opportunity to sell the juice in market chains. The apple juice is an organic and local product of the Hiiumaa Island and is to date available in 66 distribution points. The project has created new employment opportunities and it has increased the appeal of the island. Triini would like to produce other juices in the future.

    Lessons learnt

Such a success story in a small rural business illustrates the kind of development potential that makes younger people stay in our countryside, and, with assistance from the RDPs, their efforts can generate multiplier effects that reduce depopulation pressures. The beneficiary pointed out that it is important not to give up and take care when applying for support, due to the different administrative requirements.
