Exploitation of Oil Press By-products
Summary
This project focuses on the production of 'alperujo', the olive pulp remaining after crushing and processing olives to extract the oil. This is processed to produce high quality compost, used for applications such as organic soil amendment.
Background
In 2010, the regional government of Navarra established a multi-year subsidy for Local Action Groups within its RDP framework for 2007-2013, so that LAGs can implement local development programmes. This enabled LAG “TEDER” to make a grant to a developer for the exploitation of its oil press-derived by-products.
Objective
The objective was the exploitation and valorisation of 4 000 tonnes of 'alperujo' (olive pulp obtained after crushing olives for oil) and 1 000 pruned residues, generated during olive oil production and used for obtaining high quality compost, to be used in applications such as organic soil amendment.
Main activities
The company involved is dedicated to the production of olive oil that is extracted cold through mechanical processes.
Results & Benefits
The main results were the following: i) The creation of employment associated with the waste recycling plant; ii) Expected annual costs are €62 000 with revenues varying between €35 000 and €70 000. The sale price per ton of compost varies from €5 to €10 according to its composition.
Lessons learnt
Increased knowledge has been gained concerning the composition of the product in order to adjust it to the demand of future buyers, given the risk of variability in the end product. The importance of clients' use of an instruction and operational manual to ensure proper usage should also be highlighted.
