Promoting the 'Green Care' Sector in Antwerp, Flanders
Summary
Use of RDP measure 331 (training and information) to promote and embed the cooncept of 'care farming' in the Flemish Province of Antwerp through a range of vocational training activities, press events and publications.
Background
The Flemish Support Centre for Green Care (‘Steunpunt Groene Zorg’) has existed since January 2004 and aims to promote 'green care' / 'care farming' (the integration of care for a broad range of vulnerable social groups with agriculture or horticulture) in Flanders. An important focus of the Support Centre is upon both expanding and improving the quality of 'care farming' activities.
Objective
The objective of this project is to support the further expansion and improved quality of green care provided in the Flemish Province of Antwerp.
Main activities
Promotion of the green care concept through the organisation of vocational training activities, press meetings and publications. All activities included specific attention to the identification and resolution of practical problems and bottlenecks for care farming in the Province of Antwerp.
Results & Benefits
Project activities stimulated an increase in the number of 'care farms' and co-operation contracts between institutions and 'care farms' in the Province of Antwerp. Attention to the identification and resolution of practical problems and bottlenecks have helped improve the quality of 'green care', and overall the principles and practice of green care are now much more anchored and embedded in the Province and many more actors are actively involved in planning and implementing 'green care'.
Lessons learnt
Networking is a very important aspect of establishing, expanding and improving the quality of green care facilities at a local and provincial level. It is also important to follow-up and continue coaching all new care farms during their start-up phase.
