The Talty family has farmed marine products for generations. Eileen and Gerrard received EAFRD support to build a new storage and packaging facility. This has helped create permanent jobs and provide a spring board for further expansion.

For four generations the Talty family has harvested seaweed and other nutritional marine products on the West Clare coast. Eileen and Gerard Talty set up Spanish Point Sea Vegetables (now Wild Irish Sea Veg) in February 2010. The business is a sustainable use of natural resources and originally operated from a temporary facility. Very quickly the business grew to the point that a storage and packaging facility was required to manage existing orders and to accommodate further expansion. The family members decided to apply for RDP support in order to build a new storage and packaging facility.

The direct objective of the project was to build a new storage and packaging facility that would improve the ability of the business to service existing customers and their increasing market. This aimed to support the broader objectives of the company, which are to develop a greater foothold in the Irish market and to open the possibility of entering the export market.

Supported by project funding, a 170m2 unit for biodegradable packaging and storing was built and equipped. The unit was specifically designed and tailored to meet the needs of the business.

The new facility provides sustainable employment and allows harvesting skills to be passed on to younger generations. The project has met its broader objective to support the growth of the business. The company currently (2013) supplies around 500 outlets in Ireland and one speciality store in New York. It is estimated to contribute 8 million euros to the Irish economy. This family business is now well placed to enter the export market on a larger scale.

The implementation of this project highlights the fact that a traditional enterprise, such as seaweed harvesting, can be developed into a modern business with the ability to develop a significant market worldwide. In this case very successfully, with comparatively modest financial support. However, to do this, good planning of the business infrastructure and use of human as well as other resources is essential.
