The Golden Dairy

Summary

Golden Dairy Ltd has received funding for processing colostrum from Welsh farms in order to increase the protein content in milk. New modern production and processing facilities will be established to ensure a high added value for the milk produced.

Background

The project is part of the Processing and Marketing Grant (PMG) scheme of the Welsh RDP which provides financial assistance for capital investments in order to add value to agricultural and forestry products. It enables primary producers in Wales to add value to their outputs.

Objective

The main scope of the project is to start processing colostrum from Welsh farms by establishing its own production and processing facilities. Colostrum is a form of milk produced by mammals in late pregnancy, renowned for being lower in fat and higher in protein than ordinary milk. The overall objective therefore is to improve the quality of milk and to provide farmers with additional income opportunities.

Main activities

The Golden Dairy Ltd intends to establish its own production and processing facilities at a site near Narberth. Currently, colostrum is processed at the Food Centre Wales in Horeb.

Results & Benefits

The colostrum, freeze dried and sold in powder form, will be bought by the company from farms belonging to the Calon-Wen organic milk co-operative providing farmers with additional income from something that currently has no commercial value, transforming it into a profitable finished product.

Lessons learnt

Be open to opportunities for improving the quality of traditional commodity and product such as milk. Always be at the forefront of introducing modern facilities that will ensure a higher added value for your products and subsequently a better position in the market.
