Introducing a Farm Spa and Wellness Centre to Diversify a Livestock Enterprise

Summary

This long-standing family of farmers made a bold move from dairying to beef breeding - and an even bolder move into setting up a spa and wellness centre. It has rejuvenated the business, and the enthusiasm of two generations of the family.

Background

The farm has been in family ownership since 1645. Three daughters were not keen to continue dairying, and the farm buildings would have needed substantial upgrade to stay in business. So the family looked at other options. They spotted an idea for a franchised spa operation in a local magazine.

Objective

The main idea was to continue to have a family-run business, but in a diversified way. This would involve substituting beef rearing for the dairy unit, continuing the established ice-cream production, and branching into operating a spa and wellness centre in a tranquil rural setting with farm lodge accommodation as well.

Main activities

While the family owned the land, the franchise formula is owned by a different entrepreneur who is piloting the farm spa idea. The core planning activity was to figure out the details of the franchise partnership, based on two years of research and planning. A business plan was developed with the help of consultancy services. Adaptation of the farm buildings and equipping the wellness centre were the other main project actions.

Results & Benefits

By changing the farm enterprise from dairy to beef and establishing the spa wellness centre the family have stayed in business in a stimulating entrepreneurial and natural environment. More than 100 customers have been using the spa per month, with the target around 180 each month. Many local products are used - very appealing to both clients and the business owners.

Lessons learnt

Right from the start, ask for and make good use of support from local government and chamber of commerce. The municipality was proud to host the first pilot project and therefore linked its name (Nutter) to the project. Make sure the project fits the type of region and is in accordance with (zoning) plans
