Background
Between the hills and mountains of Southern Cluj, there have always been rich plains, representing valuable farmland. Lack of agricultural machinery and increasingly less young people working the land have led to abandonment. Adam, the youngest of a family of agricultural engineers, decided to join his father in working the land and provide agricultural services to the local communities. Advanced agricultural machinery was required for farming at a greater and more efficient scale.
Objective
The main aim of this Commission funded initiative was to develop and diversify the farming business activities and increase its competitiveness and efficiency.
Main activities
To achieve this objective EAFRD funds were used to purchase modern and advanced equipment and namely two new advanced tractors, loader and new attachments for ploughing and equipment.
Results & Benefits
From farming about 100 ha of land initially covered mainly by cereals, using the new machinery and equipment, the young farmer has increased the size of farmland to over 450 ha, diversifying the range of crops covered with soya, rape and beetroot. Also, the project has generated 5 employment opportunities. The farming business is currently one of the most demanded in the area for its efficient services.
Lessons learnt
Sometimes, jumping out from farming in putting together an application for Commission funds means a big step. “I realised that knowing farming would not be enough for applying for funds. Business planning involves much more specialised knowledge. Requiring the advice for professional business planning from a specialised company was a wise thing to do that turned the project into a successful application.”
