Developing the South-Estonian Food Network
Summary
EAFRD funds have provided assistance to the Alt-Lauri farm-shop and South-Estonia Food Network at the Võru county to further its marketing efforts of farm-products, including organic food.
Background
The South-Estonian Food Network started in 2006 to market organic products. It provides healthy organic agricultural products locally and regionally focusing on nurseries and schools. The Network does not deal with production but with processing of agricultural organic products and their marketing. Orders can be placed by email and goods home delivered.
Objective
The main objectives were to i) market organic products and ii) respond to their increasing demand more effectively.
Main activities
To achieve the objective EAFRD funds were used to: i) cover the project management fee of the project "Cooperation, joint marketing and developing products in small-scale food production"; ii) develop three products from organic lamb meat; iii) develop suitable package for ecological farm products and iv) establish a web-based sales environment.
Results & Benefits
The Network has managed to deal with the increasing demand for organic products. Its main beneficiaries, its members, the local community, local and regional schools and nurseries have been having effective access to organic agricultural products. Tighter cooperation among the members of the network was one of the wider benefits of the project. Income for small farmers has also been provided.
Lessons learnt
The project offers a good example in Estonia on how organically produced agricultural products are jointly processed and marketed.
