Sampaio Living Heritage Mill and Museum

Summary

This project aims to preserve and make use of traditional cultural heritage in a Portuguese region by transforming a traditional flour mill into a museum with restored original machinery. This will attract new visitors to the region.

Background

The Moagem de Sampaio mill building has a century of history. Originally it was used for corn and wheat milling and produced flour for the entire population of the region. The project initiators want to recreate this history and to use and preserve the knowledge of those local people who are old enough to remember the mill in its working days.

Objective

The aims of the project are to: - Preserve, provide access to and promote appreciation of the industrial and rural heritage of Sesimbra, particularly for young people - Provide a service, which offers cultural products in a specific area of rural heritage (traditional mills) - Promote tourism in the region - Stimulate and strengthen the consciousness of a common rural identity

Main activities

The main activities of the project are to: - Restructure the mill building - Create and publish a brochure about traditional craftsmanship, traditional art and oral history - Develop and promote guided tours in the museum and the region - Promote actions for preserving "cultural heritage" - Undertake campaigns to collect rural-related 'ethnographic assets', still existing within the community - Produce and sell traditional local products

Results & Benefits

Specific results are: - Mill and machinery are renovated and renewed - A new museum offer relating to the rural theme of milling and bread cycle has been created Broader benefits expected are: - Appreciation of the historical and ethnographic legacy - Reinforcing environmental awareness through the activities related to the generation of a new composting zone and a wheat cultivation area - Preservation of cultural (non-material) heritage - Raising consciousness of a common rural identity

Lessons learnt

So far this project has shown that it is important to: - Have simple, well defined, and feasible objectives - Ensure the involvement of the community in all phases of the project - Ensure permanent communications between the members of the team responsible. In particular close collaboration between the technicians with expertise on the various phases of the renewal works is essential - Provide detailed feedback throughout the progress of the work
