Organic Academy - Training Programme for Consultants and Agricultural School Teachers

Summary

The Danish Knowledge centre for agriculture in cooperation with organic producers’ groups implemented this training project to disseminate knowledge and boost conversion from conventional to organic agriculture.

Background

DK aims to double its organic agricultural land by 2020, which involves a shift of 18 000 ha/year, far from being reached. Organic agriculture improved during recent decades, but this knowledge has not always been passed on to agricultural schools and consultancies. The risk is that new generations taking over organic farms do not have the adequate knowledge to continue in this sector and so may decide to go back to conventional agriculture. For this reason organic producers` groups decided to implement a training programme targeting independent consultants and agricultural school teachers.

Objective

The overall objective is to disseminate among consultants and agricultural school teachers the results achieved through the research on organic production carried out over the past years. It also aims to promote the production and marketing of organic products through training focused on organic farming and related topics.

Main activities

The project is implemented through the organisation of training related activities around 5 different work packages. The main activities are: an animation campaign to promote the importance of training activities (WP3); specific training on organic agriculture for consultants and teachers; a certification system for those who participated to the training (WP4); an evaluation system to measure the real impact of the activities implemented (WP5).

Results & Benefits

48 people participated in spring 2013 in the first level of the Organic Academy. The project is still on-going, however in the short term the ambition is to ensure the necessary knowledge to shift additional 150 000 - 200 000 ha from conventional to organic farming in the next 8-10 years. In the long term, the improved skills of agricultural school teachers and consultants should contribute to optimise Danish organic farming production and its impact on the environment.

Lessons learnt

Participants to the training have different experiences and sometimes this may create some issues. For this reason it is important to tailor as much as possible the classes to the type of participants, in order for them to have a common level of knowledge in the end of the training.

Project location and other information

Training is organised in Aarhus, which is Denmark’s second largest city with about 250 000 inhabitants.
