    Supporting Young Farmers to become Competitive in Flanders

    Summary

    Assisting a young farmer to become an owner-manager of a family farm including assistance with transfer of ownership; developing a viable business plan; attracting investment to enhance the use of new technology; improving productivity & efficiency.

    Background

    This project supported the initiative of a young farmer who wanted to take over ownership and management of his family farm from his parents. The farm met all the registration requirements, including licences for farming livestock under limited environmental restrictions, production & emisison controls. The young farmer had developed a business plan which was considered to be viable and eligible for support.

    Objective

    The objective of the project was to assist the young farmer to complete transfer of ownesrhip of the farm; to improve the competitiveness of the farm business through adjustment in farm business management, skills enhancement and targeted investment in new technology, ensuring that the farm would be better placed to respond to challenges in the future.

    Main activities

    Project activities included: preparation of a business plan including capital investment and income projections; preparation and submission of application forms; arrangement and approval of all the elements required to complete formal transfer of ownership of the farm (inc. finance, farm structures improvement, legal aspects, etc); support for the development of farm business management and improvements in farm productivity and overall efficiency.

    Results & Benefits

    Results achieved included: completion of ownership transfer; improved gross margin and added value in the farm business; improved productivity per labour unit; and overall, a greater sense of economic security and future sustainability for the wider family, spanning 3 generations.

    Lessons learnt

    Accurately quantifying all the costs of transfer to a young farmer requires very good planning ability.
