Background

The Pluzninca community consists of 20 villages with a total of 5,000 inhabitants. In 2002 a youth NGO was started with the aim to prepare youth and children in this rural area for active citizenship. Identifying the existing local needs, the association has developed its offer from plain leisure activities into organising international youth exchanges and providing IT-infrastructure and training. The vision was to become a major centre for information technology in the area, serving all age groups.

Objective

The main objective of the project was to increase computer and internet education and skills for inhabitants of the region, increasing their potential and improving their possibilities to find better jobs. A more general objective was to stimulate the participation of young people in the project, particularly in teaching old people how to use a computer, in order to establish also a link between different generations.

Main activities

The main activities consisted of organising computer courses in order to train participants on how to use internet based services. The courses were organised according to the specifications set out in the "European Computer Driving Licence e-Citizen" module.

Results & Benefits

16 different training courses were organised and 192 people from the area participated. The implementation of the project helped to develop common interests between different generation, creating a bridge between young and older people. in addition, youngsters were given professional opportunities as teachers, allowing them to live and work in the countryside.

Lessons learnt

The project made creative use of young people's interest in new technologies. Big ICT companies are not interested in investing in rural areas and engaging youngsters in teaching older people how to use a computer and Internet allows to both increase the computer literacy in the area and engage two vulnerable age groups, young and old, at the same time.
