Modernisation of the Irrigation System in the Municipality of Velventos

Summary

EAFRD funds aided the Velventos Local Organisation of Land Improvement to introduce a new system of electronic water abstraction and irrigation. This has resulted in high financial benefits and the better use of resources.

Background

The Velventos Local Organisation of Land Improvement understood the need to both conserve water and improve it’s irrigation net. Environmental protection, sustainable management of natural resources, and the enforcement of the rational use of water supplies to save irrigation water are all objectives of the RDP. A project suitable for EAFRD support was therefore conceived and developed.

Objective

For the irrigation net of the Velventos Local Organisation of Land Improvement. The project aimed to: i) conserve water supplies by reducing the amount wasted; ii) record the amount of water used by each individual irrigation system and also the total amount used throughout the entire irrigation season; iii) reduce the electricity consumption of the pumping stations; iv) reduce the environmental damage caused by the pumping stations.

Main activities

The main project activity was the replacement of the simple water abstraction system of the irrigation net of Velventos with a new system of electronic abstraction. This comprised of the installation of the following equipment at key ‘default’ positions throughout the irrigation net: control screen, battery box, seal box, card slot system, rechargable card system, card recharge device, the software for the electronic cards, systems to monitor the water consumption of each user.

Results & Benefits

This project has resulted in both economic and environmental benefits. Water wasteage has been reduced with the installation of just a limited amount of new equipment. Operating costs have been reduced, most significantly by reducing electricity consumption of the pumping stations. The project has also allowed recording of analytical data on water consumption during the irrigation period, enabling the nearly immediate identification of leaks and so allowing faster actions for repairs.

Lessons learnt

With a relatively small investment in these types of water systems, a large difference can be made which quickly recuperates the cost of the initial investment. As well as providing financial benefits, this type of project also significantly benefits the environment by reducing power consumption and the waste of water.
