Adding Value to Local Timber

Summary

This project in the South Wales Valleys significantly increased the productive uses of local hardwood timber and minimised its waste, thus adding value to the local timber industry.

Background

Large volumes of hardwood timber are produced locally in Wales but much is wasted or used for low value purposes. This has provided the inspiration for this project, which aims to boost the timber industry in the Caerphilly region and at the same time safeguard and create local jobs in the sector.

Objective

The Caerffili Cwm a Mynydd Timber Yard, currently based at the Bowen Industrial Estate in Aberbargoed, aimed to introduce new methods and technologies in order to improve the supply of local timber and its uses. This project’s objectives were to collect hardwood timber and process it for more productive and sustainable uses, including supplying to local craftsmen to create high quality timber goods.

Main activities

During this project investments in the hardwood timber collection process were made. A heat treatment facility was purchased and installed, which turns poor quality timber into high value joinery grade materials.

Results & Benefits

The most notable result of this project is that poor quality timber can now be converted into higher value timber goods. Thanks to this, the uses of local hardwood timber were expanded. The project also succeeded in creating new job opportunities in the local timber industry.

Lessons learnt

Local communities and industries that operate on a small scale often do not use their products to their full potential and so can benefit from investments that add value to local products which would otherwise be wasted.
