Ardclinis Outdoor Adventure
Summary
Ardclinis Outdoor Adventure, a multi-activity business, changed the use of its building into a centre for environmental studies and outdoor pursuits and now offers more exiting indoor and outdoor activities and courses on its own grounds.
Background
Ardclinis Outdoor Adventure, established in 1991, was the first commercial outdoor activity facility in Northern Ireland. Despite the success of the business in delivering multi-activity courses, it was spending a considerable amount of time taking groups to the various venues for participation in the activities. This meant that the time the groups could spend on outdoor pursuits was reduced and it also added considerably to the operating costs of the business.
Objective
The main objective of this project was to change the use of the building on Ardclinis Outdoor Adventure’s own grounds into a centre for environmental studies and outdoor pursuits. This would in turn achieve another aim, which was to rationalise the time spent on indoor and outdoor activities and reduce costs.
Main activities
The main activities of this project were the building and landscaping works required in order to render the centre ready to provide a wide range of outdoor activities. The works were undertaken with a high degree of respect for the environment to ensure that the alterations would blend harmoniously into the landscape.
Results & Benefits
The project resulted in new facilities for the centre, which can now provide numerous activities such as; zip lining, archery, rock wall climbing and orienteering. This will ensure that Ardclinis Outdoor Adventure can continue to offer professional, bespoke and fresh programmes of events for a wide variety of participants. Also it has led to the business rationalising running costs and becoming a thriving, province-wide company delivering teambuilding, multi-activity and skill-based courses.
Lessons learnt
This project has shown that when a project is implemented as part of a local tourism development scheme (in this case the Tourism Development Scheme of the Northern Ireland Tourist Board) it ensures that the project is coherent with local development strategies and serves the real development needs of the area.
