Modernisation of a Sawmill to Sustain its Operations
Summary
In order to be able to sustain its operations in a feasible way and maintain jobs all year round the premises will be modernised by investing in new machinery to diversify its activities.
Background
The company Savoldelli is involved in wood processing activities that are mainly carried out between April to November. The company wishes to extend its activity and operations across the whole year. An initial attempt was undertaken during the winter of 2010/2011, but working conditions did not make this feasible. To remedy this, the sawmill is plans to invest in machinery and equipment which will allow it to diversify its activities producing local wood panelling.
Objective
With this project, the company is aiming to: 1) Improve the working conditions (comfort, security) of its employees; 2) Develop a new product to meet local demand; 3) Increase the company’s productivity and turnover; 4) Create year-round activity, making jobs sustainable. This growth will eventually enable the manager’s children to take over the company and further develop its operations with potential to hire additional staff.
Main activities
The project partly consists in purchasing a four-sided planer. This can transform larch wood into panelling. Secondly, the company has invested in racks to dry and saw the wood. This improvement makes handling easier and indirectly embellishes the premises.
Results & Benefits
In August 2011, the company created a new line of operation when it started the production of panelling for home interiors and roof panelling. This winter, they hope to be able to continue their activity and thereby transform the three seasonal jobs into permanent positions. In addition the company plans to enclose and heat part of the building containing the new machinery to improve the working conditions for the employees.
Lessons learnt
This project will contribute to the development of the national timber sector. This sector benefits from collaborative and coherent development due to the establishment of a national forestry charter. Coordination between the Charter and the different sources of financing enables various projects to be carried out while remaining consistent with the national development strategy.
