Axis 3 support in Lithuania, assisted a company to produce cheap and environmentally friendly fuel by using locally produced straw waste, thus creating additional income for the farmers and new jobs in the local economy.

Straw briquettes are a new product in the Lithuanian market. The use of straw as fuel is beneficial not only for the consumer since it is a cheaper fuel which helps to preserve nature, but also for the farmers as they receive additional income from the sale of straw, crop waste and rape. The project can potentially influence not only economic prosperity of the company but also the national well-being in terms of economy, energy and environment.

The main objectives of this project are to develop new and maintain the existing jobs in the area and to increase the diversity and scope of the non-agricultural activities in the village.

The use of straw briquettes helps to save money that are used for consumption of fuel. It is also beneficial for the farmers who can get an additional income from selling straw, crop waste and rape which is used for production of the fuel.

The project is still running and it is early to speak about results at the moment. It is expected that the users of the straw briquettes will receive the main benefits of this project.

The project was evaluated as very risky and there were no insurance companies that wanted to insure it. The applicant suggests that filling in the application forms with too many details is not a good practice.
