A Producer Organisation in Guadeloupe adopts Energy Efficiency Solutions

Summary

A producer group in Guadeloupe adopt energy efficient solutions through the purchasing of refrigerated electric vehicles and the installation of a photovoltaic wind generator thus reducing business costs and saving emissions.

Background

SICAPAG is a group of 58 agricultural producers specialised in the production, selling and transport of fresh fruits and vegetables. To face the increasing trade volumes and, consequently, the proportional raise of transport costs, SICAPAG decided to pilot the use of an electric vehicle in order to control and reduce energy consumption.

Objective

The objective of the pilot project was to increase energy efficiency in relation to the transport of products to the customer, which was usually carried out with conventional refrigerated trucks (diesel-operated).

Main activities

EAFRD funds were mainly used for the purchase of two refrigerated electric vehicles. The new refrigerated vans have a load capacity of 350 kg to 450 kg each and roll up to 40 km / h, maintaining a consumption of around 2 800 to 3 000 watts with a charging time from 8 to 10 hours. The technical specificities make it possible to deliver to customers within a radius of 20 km. Energy-efficiency investments were completed with the installation of a photovoltaic wind generator.

Results & Benefits

The project was presented as part of the Energy Performance Plan (EPP) backed by the Rural Development Plan of Guadeloupe (PDRG). The direct benefits from the investments included the reduction of energy consumption and related costs. In monetary terms, SICAPAG saved € 10 000 per year in fuel, or 8 800 L of diesel. Further, 22 tonnes of CO2 per year are no longer released in the air.

Lessons learnt

The use of the new energy-saving equipment shows that pursuing energy efficiency objectives go hand-to-hand with boosting economic and environmental performance and ultimately contribute to the development of the agricultural sector. These kinds of investments have an horizontal nature and can be realised by other agricultural businesses as well.
