Summary
This Galician project involved the purchase and rehabilitation of a building to create a community residence for the severely disabled, where they can be offered basic care, educational and professional occupational training.
Background
"Asociacio de personas con discapacidade AVANTE" works in the area of integrating disabled people in the fight for equal opportunities. The association has recognised that the area lacks facilities for people with severe disabilities who cannot be sufficiently assisted by their families. In this context, the decision to create a centre for such people was considered a high priority.
Objective
The objective of this project was to expand the services offered by the association to the disabled and for their family environment. This should be achieved through the creation of a residential centre to supplement day centres and occupational services, promoting independent living among the disabled.
Main activities
The main activity was the acquisition and restoration of a building for subsequent use as a protected community residence. As a result, the centre can offer basic care, as well providing an intellectual stimulus for the disabled, with educational and professional occupational training.
Results & Benefits
The project resulted in improvement of the quality of life of the severely disabled and their families, providing them with the facilities they need, along with professional educational support. The range of such services available in the area was expanded, with the creation of highly skilled jobs in the healthcare sector.
Lessons learnt
The main challenge was to locate funding. Since it involves the purchase and rehabilitation of a building, the costs are very high and cannot be raised by an association of this type. This problem was resolved through combined efforts to search for opportunities through various lines of funding. Another issue to be aware of with such a project, is the length of time required to carry out a project of this nature.
