    Development of a Tasting Room

    Summary

This project enabled the Schumacher family to create a tasting room in their vineyard, allowing the direct sale of their wines while promoting rural tourism and regional products.

    Background

The Schumacher-Knepper vineyard, in the Luxembourg valley of Moselle, produces traditional and sparkling wines of outstanding quality. Started in 1714, today the family business relies on the expertise and traditions of seven generations. After some investments in the last decades to equip the vineyard with modern machinery for wine production, the family decided to invest also in the direct commercialisation of their products. The launch of this new business required some works to be done in order to create the necessary facilities (tasting room, offices, etc.).

    Objective

The main objective of the project was to create a tasting room to commercialise the wine produced in the Schumacher vineyard.

    Main activities

The project consisted in the rearrangement and expansion of the ground floor of the factory, creating new areas responding to specific business needs. Besides the office spaces and a reception, a tasting and selling room has been arranged, with a capacity of 40 people, including facilities for people with reduced mobility. A small tasting room has also been created for the reception of individual customers.

    Results & Benefits

The main result of the project has been the generation of additional income. The project also contributed to the development of rural and cultural tourism and the valorisation of regional products.

    Lessons learnt

Giving attention to market trends and costumers' main interests enables to expand the business viability. Planning carefully the investments and reducing as much as possible financial losses are also considered important success factors.
