Promoting Tourism and Cultural Heritage in Koper
Summary
The environmental protection and promotion of cultural heritage and rural tourism in Slovenia's Koper Hinterland. The aim of the project is to improve the markings of natural and cultural landmarks, to enhance visitors' enjoyment of the area.
Background
The municipality of Koper and its hinterlands is characterised by a great potential to develop tourism and leisure activities, mainly related to sport, gastronomy and cultural heritage. As a destination, it has a favourable geographic location, good infrastructure and rich natural and cultural heritage. However, the numerous attractions in the region are not really well marked and easily recognisable to visitors.
Objective
By putting in place information boards and screens, the main aim of the project is to inform visitors in a simple way about the best places to visit in the municipality of Koper and in the neighborhood.
Main activities
The main activities envisaged to implement the project are: purchasing information boards and screens and installing them at key points; selecting 50 key landmarks, which illustrate the natural and cultural attractiveness of the area, writing the description to be displayed on boards and screens; translating the description into three languages (IT, EN and DE); developing a uniform graphic design for promotional brochures and managing their dissemination.
Results & Benefits
The project is still ongoing but the expected results are: tourism promotion and raised awareness among local people about the attractiveness and the cultural heritage sites of Koper and improved information available for tourists encouraging them to visit also the internal territory and not only the coast. Fifty key cultural and natural heritage landmarks have been already created.
Lessons learnt
The implementation of the project enabled promoters to familiarise themselves with the legislation related to the protection of the natural environment and cultural heritage and with the procedures and permits needed for launching similar activities.
