Background

The 'Clean Fuel Concept' project was generated by a local group of farmers who worked hard to gain information from all relevant sources and elaborated several different alternatives before commencing the project.

Objective

The objectives of the Clean Fuel Concept are to i) Contribute to meeting today’s and tomorrow’s needs for more environmentally friendly fuels by introducing an innovative method for extracting biogas from manure; ii) Benefit both the farmers directly involved in the network and the local community which also benefits from the production of a more environmentally friendly fuel.

Main activities

The main activities were: 1) Construction and installation of underground pipes for transportation of biogas from on-farm digestors. 2) Installation of a central central processing plant cabable of treating bio-gas to comply with vehicle fuel standards. The biogas is then distributed through a pipeline to filling stations or gas suppliers. Farmers part own the facility.

Results & Benefits

The main positive project results / benefits are: I) Creation of biogas from manure in commercially viable quantities from the autumn of 2010 - increasing farmers incomes; 2) Increase in the availability and use of 'clean' fuel - benefiting the local community; 3) 'Future proofing' - the Infrastructure has been designed so as to allow the expansion of the scheme through the gradual participation of more farmers.

Lessons learnt

Key success factors identified are: 1) Wide local involvement with farmers/entrepreneurs taking responsibility of as much as possible of the production process; 2) Enthustiastic project management; 3) An integrated approach (farm to filling stations). The project received an award for best environmental project in rural areas at the NRN Swedish Rural Gala 2009.
