On-farm Diversification into Solar Power
An organic farm has successfully diversified its activities into the production and use of solar power. The plant installed produces 12 times more electricity than the farm consumes and so provides an extra income as well as reducing CO2 emissions.
Mr Košir, a farmer, runs an organic farm. Recently he decided to diversify beyond his agricultural activities, mainly because he wanted to do something positive for the environment. For this reason he chose to invest in renewable energy technology, which is both environmentally friendly and sustainable. The energy produced would be able to be used on the farm and possibly improve its economic performance and viability.
The main objectives of this project were for the farm to: Produce energy, in the forms of heat and electricity, from sustainable sources for on-farm use Increase the use of the renewable energy sources and reduce the CO2 emissions of the farm Increase the focus on environmentally friendly farming – specifically organic crop farming and animal husbandry
This project installed a 70 kW solar energy plant on the farm, which produces twelve times more electricity than the farm consumes. This included the installation of photovoltaic (PV) modules, which cover 462 m2 of the south-western roof part of the housing and commercial premises.
Results & Benefits
The project has reduced the greenhouse gas emissions of the farm by 65 tonnes of CO2 each year due to the energy provided by the photovoltaic plant, which produces 74MWh of electricity. Also the surplus energy can supply others with electricity and this has helped improve the economic performance of the farm. A secondary benefit is that the plant can provide an effective demonstration to other farmers of the positives of diversifying into energy production.
The development of the on-farm solar plant has shown that farms have many additional development possibilities and this project is an example to other farms. This project has also shown that with the support of adequate consultancy advice and governmental subsidies, it is possible for small enterprises to enter into the energy supply sector, which in the past was considered to be reserved for only large energy companies.
