Background

The lack of processing facilities for organic poultry in Denmark was the main obstacle for organic companies to address the increased demand for this product. Slaughtering and processing organic chicken requires a separated processing line. Moreover, organic chicken being too big, it often does not fit in the machinery available in a conventional slaughterhouse.

Objective

The main objective of the project was to provide the company “Sødams Organic Poultry” with new facilities for slaughtering and storing chicken. In addition to this, the project aimed to enhance cooperation between organic poultry producers and to create new permanent jobs in the area.

Main activities

The main activity undertaken during the project implementation consisted in the renovation and installation of new equipment for a building to make it suitable to be a slaughterhouse that could be used both by the company and by other producers. A part of the building was designated to be a cold storage room.

Results & Benefits

The new slaughterhouse enabled the 'Sødams Organic Poultry' and the other producers using the facility to significantly reduce costs (transport, veterinary controls, etc.) and administrative requirements related to slaughtering outside the country. The project increased the offer of organic poultry on the local market. The use of on-line sales allowed selling organic chicken across the country. Five new full-time jobs in the Tønder municipality were also created.

Lessons learnt

The projected shows that it is possible to retain business activity in a remote rural area through a focus on high quality food production also marketed towards consumers in city areas. Sødam is a known brand of Danish organic chicken production, and is one of the few who have received a certification from the national animal protection organisation because of the good conditions for the poultry.

Project location and other information

The Sødam organic slaughterhouse is located in Døstrup, Tønder municipality, in southwestern Jutland, not far from the German border.
