Modernisation of Existing Grain Dryers and Establishment of a Rice Packaging Unit
Summary
A well-established cooperative invested in the modernisation of a rice plant to improve the quality of processing and packaging intended to add value to the final products and facilitate the links between producer groups and consumers.
Background
The agricultural cooperative “Chalastras” is one of the oldest and biggest in Greece and has strived since its inception to ensure equal cooperation and mutual support amongst its members. The purpose of its productive activity is the processing and marketing of agricultural products. The cooperative has over time created and expanded storage facilities for cereals, set up grain silos and modernised its equipment. The current project stems from the need to continuously improve productivity, product quality and timely delivery to markets.
Objective
The overall objectives of this investment are to reduce production costs, increase turnover, expand the client base and improve the competitiveness of their products. The specific objectives are to build a new modern purpose-built grain dryer suitable for drying rice and corn, to install two silos with an independent connection to the dryer, to install a rice packaging line and to install energy saving equipment.
Main activities
The investment consists of a) the expansion and improvement of storage spaces b) the installation of two modern silos, including the necessary supporting equipment, such as conveyor belts, tower lifts, pipelines, silos grain storage, ventilation system, temperature control equipment, all incorporating the latest technology, c) a specialised grain dryer for rice and corn and d) a packaging line for rice using a welding machine in cellophane packaging film.
Results & Benefits
The project will lead to the automation and improved operation of the production process and better packaging that will render the final products more competitive, while also increasing the producer group revenues. The final product will be of higher quality as it will be separated upon receipt, while waiting time for rice producers will be minimised. Environmental benefits stem from the recycling of liquid and solid waste and energy saving equipment.
Lessons learnt
Mutual support and equitable cooperation of members have been key to the success of projects undertaken by the cooperative. Continuous incorporation of high technology in production processes and quality control are fundamental for enhanced competitiveness.
