Video:
Background
Idálio Ramos is a young producer of quality goat cheese in the centre of the Algarve region. Following the family tradition, the young man keeps his flock of goats and cultivates inherited ways of producing cheese from their milk.
Objective
The main objective was to maintain the traditional family production of goat cheese, whilst increasing its capacities and meeting current hygienic-sanitary requirements for the development of the activity.
Main activities
The manufacturer was equipped with modern technological solutions for milking and dairy processing that allowed for increased production capacity. The cheese is now produced according to rigorous hygiene and safety standards. The milk to process is also received from other goat breeders from Algarve.
Results & Benefits
The project greatly contributed to improving economic sustainability of a young farming family in an area where economic activities are scarce and there is a lack of job opportunities. It also allowed maintaining family traditions by producing a unique sort of goat cheese.
Lessons learnt
The purchase of equipment was essential to work with dairy and milking, and to increase the profitability of the farm.
