Creating New Livelihoods for Women in the Stockholm Archipelago
Summary
Based on careful research into labour force capabilities, the project has created a number of new and sustainable livelihoods for women on the island of Moja (Nominated for Rural Award 2011).
Background
Stockholm archipelago's biggest problem is how to survive economically. New jobs must be created that allow the permanent resident population to stay and also to get new families to move onto the archipelago. Previous surveys by the project "Open Archipelago - the year" found that there was plenty of labour on the islands, mainly women and young people.
Objective
The project's goal has been to provide the basis for starting up a company with several jobs on the island Möja in the Stockholm archipelago. The project's specific objective has been to generate enough customers and revenue for a Call Center, in order for it to provide employment. The project also aimed to develop a business model appropriate to the unique conditions that exist when living and working on an island.
Main activities
The main activities of the project were: 1) Conduct of an 'inventory'of the strengths of the labour force (in particular women and young people); 2) Technical survey and technical tests in IP telephony; 3) Testing of various services, products and customer types to assess sustainability and profitability; 4) Development of a specific business model; 5) Development of recommendations on an ownership structure for the company.
Results & Benefits
A company has been successfully created (building on experience from previous project in 2009) using a specific busoinmess model suitable for an island in the Stockholm archipelago. Employment and new livelihoods have been created for women. The company has generated three permanent staff positions and has a 'reserve' force of five people.
Lessons learnt
The lessons drawn are: 1) To generate sustainable employment, careful research into needs and capabilities is important; 2) From the early stages, there must be a plan for how a project's results will become sustainable so that the investment provides a permanent result.
