Creating a Cultural Event in the Bavarian Forest
Summary
This project used EAFRD support to bring a music festival to the Bavarian Forest with the goal of connecting local inhabitants more closely with their culture, environment, communities and local economy.
Background
A dramatic decline in tourism in the Bavarian Forest region has caused project organisers to investigate new ways of attracting tourists to the region. The lack of a regional music festival was seen to be a major omission.
Objective
The festival aims to demonstrate the relationship between residents of the Bavarian Forest and their environment, and to connect industries and counties with regional municipalities. At the centre is the meeting of artists with the public - to identify and teach different aspects of the lifestyle. The festival could be the first truly international music event in the region, and aims to be successful through lots of PR work and low ticket prices.
Main activities
A series of high quality classical concerts were organised in September 2009 with International classical stars will be invited alongside well-known artists from the Bavarian Forest region. The concerts were a meeting point for locals and tourists and held in special, exciting, locations such as an idyllic mountain farmyard, cloisters, barns, quarries and wood glades.
Results & Benefits
The aim was to offer outstanding contemporary music at an affordable price to residents and to visitors to the Bavarian Forest. This is intended to help build a regional identity and, indirectly, secure and create jobs, particularly in tourism, as well as improve the quality of life. Apart from increasing the public’s cultural and musical awareness, benefits will include the networking of municipalities and counties, and the integration of regional businesses.
Lessons learnt
The networking of communities and regions as well as the planned role the economy will play in the Bavarian Forest region will inevitably create synergies and benefits as well as some lessons for the future.
