Setting a Wine Tasting Space in an Open to Visitors Winery
Summary
EAFRD funding assisted a family organic winery to improve its infrastructural facilities for visitors. It can now accommodate visitors to its two wooden canopies for wine tasting, and inform them of the technologies used and the wine making process.
Background
The winery is surrounded by vineyards, which are grown organically and according to the principles of the Vegan process, i.e. with no use of animal ingredients. In the wider area there is no vertical plant growing organic vineyard, wine production from organic farming or Vegan certified wines. The relatively small interior space and poor infrastructure around the winery could only welcome limited number of visitors. Improved infrastructure outside the winery and an enlarged area were required to welcome visitors and give them the opportunity to taste the wine and its products.
Objective
The project aimed to construct a unit easily accessible by visitors throughout the year as each season is characterised by a particular growing - winemaking process. The required infrastructural improvements aimed to give the change to visitors to closely attend the complete production process, from the vineyard, to production, to bottling and finally in the market.
Main activities
Two wooden canopies next to the winery accommodate visitors. These are equipped with the required electrical installations, a playground for children, wooden tables and benches for the wine tasting, and are accessible to visitors with disabilities. Traditional equipment such as winemaking and viticulture tools are in display and demonstrate the technological differences of the past and the present. Audiovisual material inform the visitors about viticulture and the wine production process.
Results & Benefits
The infrastructural improvements led to an increase in the number of visitors to the winery, which benefited the region as a whole by making it a "a visitors' reference point" as well as raise public awareness for environmentally friendly farming practices and the old methods of winemaking. Further, two new types of tourism are expected to flourish in the region: (i) "wine-tourism" and (ii) "educational tourism" as a result of visits from various educational institutions.
Lessons learnt
Prerequisite for engaging in such an activity is the amateur involvement, prior to the endeavouring in the implementation of a business investment, and the revival of local varieties in the intervention area.
