Supporting the Growth of the Small Farm of Mr Gheorghe Bud
Summary
Gheorghe Bud is a small-scale livestock farmer in Satu Mare County. This project has increased the productivity of his farm by providing for new agricultural machinery and livestock and through creating a water supply system for his animals.
Background
Gheorghe Bud attended a seminar in 2008 where he learnt of the EAFRD support available to small farmers who wish to improve their farm businesses. Most important was that the support was a grant not a repayable loan. Following this, Mr Bud decided to submit a project proposal for the development of his small farm, with the aim of achieving higher revenues and a better position in the market. Mr Bud became a pioneer in Turt, as his project was the first one approved in the commune.
Objective
The main objective of the project was to increase the productivity of the small scale mixed farm and as a result, increase the revenue generated.
Main activities
The main activities consisted of the acquisition of new agricultural machinery, to enable more efficient management of the 15 ha farm, and the construction of a water supply system for the stables. Three cows were also purchased, increasing the number of livestock units from five to eight.
Results & Benefits
The new machinery has increased productivity, enabling Mr Bod to lease 10 ha of land and ensure the farm’s fodder supply. The improved water supply system has ended difficulties caused by droughts. Mr Bud has become a certified ‘sole-business person’ and now benefits from indirect coverage for health care and pension services. Based on Mr bud’s positive example, other small farmers in the commune who want their farms to become more competitive have since applied for similar financial support.
Lessons learnt
This project has shown that a small investment can have a large impact. All it takes is for one actor to demonstrate what is possible, then others following suit can start to improve an entire area. An inference of this is that that ‘peer ambassadors’ are the best way to encourage others to become involved and benefit from the Rural Development Programme. It is important to remember that this chain of events was started by a seminar, which highlights their importance in raising awareness.
Project location and other information
The project is located in the Susani Village, Turt Commune, Satu Mare County. The beneficiary intends to access new measures of the NRDP aiming to further develop his farm to 40 cows, with fully equipped stables and all the installations in compliance with the EU standards.
