Background
The background of the study originates in the challenge to get museums to attract more visitors in the future. The people of Europe have had for millennia economic and political relations and exchanged ideas and symbols. Already in prehistoric times trading between different areas in Europe was widespread and ideas and beliefs were dispersed. The project ‘The empire of the sun’ worked to launch museum activities about famous religious symbols in a better and more modern and interactive way through cooperation between three museums for establishing a digital platform.
Common Objectives
The purpose was to create a common digital museum based platform which gives information from the three regions about the German Nebra sky disc, the Danish Sun Chariot and the Swedish rock carvings. The general scope pf the project was to enhance the museum visitors` experience; raise awareness and disseminate information about natural and cultural heritage; introduce new and improve the existing service facilities; and attract more visitors to each other’s museums and other interesting places in the regions involved.
Main Joint Activities
The project activities aimed at setting up a common high quality digital platform with a presentation of the respective museum expeditions/sites. In addition, a common flyer was developed. The same design was used for the website, the pamphlets, folders, applications and Q-texts for phones to be placed in the area where the museum objects were found. During the project period, three to four steering committee meetings were held, and a final conference was organised to disseminate results.
Results and Transferability
Dissemination materials and the common website were created. In particular the website is the most tangibel result of the project. New job opportunities were created in the involved regions, and the number of tourists visiting the museums as well as other touristic attraction in the regions, increased.
Lessons learnt
Implementing a transnational cooperation project may be challenging, mainly due to existing different procedures among countries. As a consequence it requires good coordination, and a dedicated person who can follow the project progress and deal with its administration.
