Establishment of a Winery and Bottling Plant for Organic Grape Processing
Summary
A young family business intends to revive a traditional vineyard grape variety and produce high quality wines using innovative new equipment applying organic processes at all production and processing stages.
Background
The wine-making family business Kamara Winery dedicated to organic wine production was established in 2009 and has been gradually expanding its vineyards. The current project is born out of the vision of its owners to revive the old renowned vineyards of Melissochori. The area was once famous for what was known as the Baltza variety wine. The beneficiary is committed to organic viticulture and wine-making and intends to use organic methods to revive this old traditional variety that is no longer produced.
Objective
The overall objective of the project is to boost the morale of the remaining cultivators in the region, to attract new ones and to promote the use of organic methods in wine-making. Specific objectives include utilising the grapes produced both by the company’s own vineyards and those produced by other producers in the wider region, with the parallel development of organic viticulture and bottling of high quality wines from organically grown grapes.
Main activities
The investment concerns the establishment of a new facility for the receipt and processing of organically grown grapes. It involves landscaping, construction of a winery-bottling facility, including all the necessary production spaces (storage, processing, bottling, offices, cellar, wine-tasting area and sewer system). New innovative equipment is to be used for the cooling, pre-fermentation, oxygenation, bottling and sterilisation processes.
Results & Benefits
The new facility will increase productive capacity, capitalise on the primary production of local grape growers and revive the wine-making potential of the region with the use of organic methods. There are benefits expected for the local economy through the foreseen revenue increase for local wine producers and the consequent job creation. Local wines will become more competitive at national and European level as a result of quality improvements entailed in the more innovative processes.
Lessons learnt
It takes vision and commitment to revive old traditions that can survive in today’s economic environments. Local soil and weather conditions in the area of Melissochori where the investment is located favour the production of high quality wines, and wine-making can be a key source of income for local farmers. This potential should be exploited at all times and encourage young generations to engage with what can be considered a key asset of the Greek countryside.
