The Production of Environmentally-Friendly Soap in Greece
Summary
EAFRD funds were used to help establish a production company that manufactures soap from olive oil, in Crete. The philosophy of the project is centred on diversification of the rural economy and the principles of green entrepreneurship.
Background
Local economic diversification and green entrepreneurship are at the heart of this project. The production equipment has been chosen so as to improve the energy efficiency of the production process; it combines low power consumption and high efficiency. In this way the ecological character of the business is maintained and it can contribute to the green economy. The environmental impact is limited as the manufacturing process avoids the use of toxic substances and waste. Organic olive oil rich in healthy fats is used for the production of soap.
Objective
The project aims to: i) create a new sustainable business having a direct and indirect positive impact on employment; ii) encourage the diversification of the rural economy; iii) develop entrepreneurship and enhance competitiveness; iv) promote green growth in rural areas; and v) strengthen innovative action directed towards green economy.
Main activities
The main activities include: i) the procurement of equipment; ii) the hiring of a suitable site that comply with the preconditions for the establishment of biological soap and related products; iii) preparing an environmental impact evaluation, a sewage disposal system and a fire protection study; and iv) reshaping the interior space of the facilities so as to be appropriate for production and distribution.
Results & Benefits
All equipment has been selected to optimise the energy efficiency of the production process. One of the main project results is the low use of power coupled with high energy efficiency. Organic olive oil rich in healthy fats is used in the production of the soap, unlike soap made of industrialised and raw materials of animal origin.
Lessons learnt
The creative and original exploitation of a typical Mediterranean agricultural product to enable the production of a high quality commercial product for everyday use and based on natural ingredients can lead to a successful and profitable green enterprise.
