Reconstruction of the Railway Building, Worpswede station
Summary
The renovation of the Worpswede railway station, a national heritage listed building originating from 1910 and designed by artist and architect Heinrich Vogeler, supports the vitalization of local tourism.
Background
The railway building is located in the northern German artists’ colony of Worpswede. It is a popular destination and stop of the ‘Moorexpress’, a historic train, which is run by the EVB (Eisenbahnen und Verkehrsbetriebe Elbe-Weser, railway and bus company). It uses the track between Bremen and Stade and crosses the Teufelsmoor marshland.
Objective
The objective of the project was to restore the partly heavy structurally defect railway building on the in- and outside to its original state, as it was designed by the architect Heinrich Vogeler. As the building is located in the artist colony Worpswede, it is a local attraction for tourists and contributes to the revitalisation of the colony. The colony was founded in 1889 and is nowadays hosting exhibitions, galleries and workshops.
Main activities
Maintenance measures were implemented and sponsored. This concerned the bricking of the main building and the freight shed, the roofing, joinery and carpentry of windows and doors as well as paintwork on the facade. Furthermore, the greening around the railway building was newly arranged.
Results & Benefits
By reconstructing the cultural heritage in the artists’ colony of Worpswede, a cornerstone of tourism in the region was restored and preserved. The project promotes and upgrades regional tourism.
Lessons learnt
By searching a solution for financing the restoration of the railway building, a broad cooperation of clubs, Federal state authority, the administrative district and the community of Worpswede worked together. A club from Worpswede did the paintwork in personal contribution.
