Diversifying into Agri-tourism and Direct Sales
Summary
Diversification into agri-tourism enabled this farm, located in the Pardubice region, to increase its economic viability. The farm can host up to 20 guests who can take part in activities providing an insight into the workings of agricultural life.
Background
The Lipina dairy farm is located in Lipina, in the Pardubice region of eastern Bohemia. Considering the attractiveness of the region to tourists, Milan Víšek decided to diversify into agri-tourism. Mr Víšek, purchased an adjacent farm with the intention of renovating the unused buildings to create tourist facilities.
Objective
The main project objective was to diversify the farm’s agricultural activities into agri-tourism and thus increase income and economic sustainability. This was to be achieved by renovating old, unused, buildings and the purchase of necessary furniture and equipment to create accommodation and related tourist amenities such as an exhibition room and leisure facilities and a farm shop.
Main activities
The main activities of the project were to: renovate the newly bought farm buildings to provide tourist facilities; purchase the furniture and equipment for the accommodation and leisure facilities; set up the exhibition room (presenting the farm’s history), and; set up the farm shop (for the tasting and sale of farm products). Activities at the farm were designed particularly for families with the aim of enabling adults and, more importantly, children to gain an insight into farming life.
Results & Benefits
Diversification into agro-tourism has contributed to making the farm more viable. The project successfully converted the old farm buildings into 4 fully equipped apartments capable of accommodating 20 guests. The exhibition room was renovated and equipped, as was the farm shop in which the milk and cheeses produced by the farm can be purchased. The farmer also promotes other local products of the region at his farm.
Lessons learnt
Direct sales of good quality products on the site of the farm, rather than solely through wholesalers, attract more attention from tourists and local people and also generate higher margins. Furthermore, allowing guests the opportunity to experience farm life helps people to better understand agriculture and its function within society, as well, it is hoped, improving people’s opinion about rural life including agriculture, which is in many cases negative.
