Management of Rural Development

Rural development policy in Sweden is the overall responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Swedish Board of Agriculture (Managing Authority). The Ministry of Agriculture, in consultation with other relevant government agencies and stakeholder groups, has developed the Swedish National Strategy Plan (NSP) for rural development, specifying the overall scale and scope of future rural policy programmes for the period 2007-2013. This document is complemented by a single Rural Development Programme (RDP), covering the period 2007-2013, which defines the focus and range of structural and rural measures available to support rural areas.

Summary of rural development policy objectives

The Swedish RDP has four key strategic objectives, namely:

  • Sustainable development and sustainable use of natural resources;
  • Promoting rural, agricultural and forestry enterprise growth, competitiveness and employment, whilst contributing to a sustainable use of natural resources;
  • Promoting knowledge, innovation and entrepreneurship in rural areas;
  • Inclusion of young people, women and people of foreign ethnic origin, who are under-represented in the agriculture and forestry sectors.
