Modernising Tradition - Sweets Production 'Doces de Pereira'
Summary
The project modernised the manufacturing of traditional sweets in a Portuguese region. Combining traditional techniques with increased, more efficient production and a new marketing scheme has greatly contributed to the development of the enterprise.
Background
For around 25 years Maria de Lurdes Santos Oliveira has been producing and promoting the traditional sweets of Vila de Pereira, such as 'Quejadas de Pereira', 'Barrigas de Freira', and 'Papos de Anjos'. Her manufacturing process produces the sweets based on the traditional recipes, which are embedded in several centuries of history in Vila da Pereira.
Objective
The objective of this LADER supported project was to modernise the manufacturing process with the introduction of new equipment while still maintaining the traditional elements of the production. Additionally, the projected aimed to improve sales through the introduction of a new marketing strategy.
Main activities
The traditional manufacturing facilities have been extended and modernised with new equipment. New IT systems were purchased and a sustainable energy generation method introduced to further modernise the business. In addition to this, a new marketing strategy has been developed promoting the regional gastronomy.
Results & Benefits
This project has achieved its original aims and allowed the expansion of production capacities in a sustainable way as well as increasing profitability. The new marketing promotion has also been successful and Vila de Pereira is now more widely associated with these unique products. Moreover, the project resulted in the creation of two new jobs and indirectly around ten more at the sales points. Now the beneficiary is intending to further develop the distribution of her unique products.
Lessons learnt
This project is a good example of how to combine tradition with modern production methods while still maintaining the original conventional 'feel' of the products. Such modernisation is now often essential to ensure the profitability of these artisanal enterprises and so keep regional traditions alive.
