Biogas Production on a Large Mixed Farm

Summary

RDP support (measure 311) for the diversification of a large mixed farm into biogas production in order to broaden its income base; make use of substantial farm waste; sell electricity into the national grid, and; secure employment.

Background

This farming company produces both animal and plant products. With farm commodity prices fluctuating and cash flow variable throughout the year, the plan was to construct a biogas station to process animal and plant waste into biogas for generation of electricity for the national grid and for heating farm buildings and local area facilities.

Objective

To construct a biogas station that will make use of the renewable energy resources of the farm (notably animal manure) for the production, consumption and sale of electricity and heat - thereby diversifying the income base of the farm, spreading income more evenly and creating and securing employment.

Main activities

The project has proceeded through the following steps: a) development of the biogas idea and detailed business planning for financing and execution; b) making use of an advisory service; c) preparation and submission of a funding application to the RDP administration; d) construction of the biogas unit, and; e) conclusion of the development and operationalising of the biogas station.

Results & Benefits

Key results and benefits are: 1) Diversified and expanded income base with improved cash flow throughout the year; 2) Using renewable sources of energy to reduce waste and lower carbon emissions; 3) Utilisation of non-productive parts of the farm; 4) Creation of one full-time job and securing of other jobs on the farm, and; 5) Development of networking and commercial links with local, national and international companies.

Lessons learnt

The reporting and financial accountability demanded by the RDP is rigorous and must be adequately planned for.
