Management of Rural Development

Rural Development in Slovakia is managed by the Ministry of Agriculture. Rural Development policy is defined in the Slovakian National Strategy Plan (NSP) for Rural Development and a single Rural Development Programme (RDP) covering the whole country. The National Strategy of Slovakia for rural development is based on the main EU priorities (Lisbon, Göteborg) with the emphasis on economic growth, employment and sustainability.

Summary of rural development policy objectives

The general objectives were chosen in accordance with the Community Strategic Guidelines (CSG) and the National priorities for a sustainable rural development in order to deal with the major rural areas’ needs:

  • to increase the competitiveness of agriculture, food and forestry sector and to improve the environment by introducing suitable farming and forestry systems and the quality of life in the rural areas with the emphasis on the sustainable development;
  • to promote the development of economic activities suitable for the rural areas;
  • to protect the environment and the cultural heritage;
  • to improve the quality of life of the rural population;
  • to improve the competitiveness of the agricultural and forestry sector through increasing the effectiveness and quality of the production while adhering to the principles of sustainable development and the principles of ecologic farming in the rural areas;
  • to improve the environment and the countryside by introducing suitable agricultural and forestry management systems;
  • to improve the quality of life in rural areas and the diversification of the rural economy in the framework of creating new employment opportunities, promoting training activities and village renewal and development and contributing to the reduction of regional disparities of rural areas in Slovakia.
