Interpretation of whetstone craftwork heritage

Numerous deserted quarries of sandstone speak of the flourishing local sand stone cutters’ trade in the 19th and 1st half of the 20th century. An exhibition in the reconstructed stonecutter cottage provide us some information on this local heritage, however it remains an unused potential of the region. The objective is to develop various new interpretation programmes for tourist and visitors of Rogatec, based on traditional contents, to create and support local inhabitants’ consciousness of using them.

The LAG is located in the south –east of SI at the Croatian border. The recognisable natural and cultural heritage is the foundational bearer of the cultural tourism (renaissance baroque Strmol Mansion, the largest ethnological Open-Air Museum in SI, town nucleus, equestrian centre, mountain Donacka gora). There are various services offered to visitors: sightseeing tours, ethnographic display and workshops of local crafts and customs (bread baking, corn husk and willow weaving, hand weaving, folk music and dances), hiking, cycling, horse riding, paragliding….

Activities: • Transnational cooperation and exchange of information and experiences; • Renovation, reconstruction of one deserted quarry “in situ” to make it accessible for guided tours; • Organising and carrying out training for potential stone cutters; • Designing and carrying out interpretation programmes (selective guided tours, craft work demonstrations, experience and learn workshops)

Partners with experience in interpretation of wet stone craft work heritage in relation to tourism and service development from any of the EU Member States.
