Exchanges of practices between professionals, artists, elected people, volunteers and citizens around the artistic presence on rural territories in Europe

La chambre d'eau is an artistic & cultural organisation based for 10 years in a rural area in the region Nord-Pas-de-Calais in France. The association aims to initiate & to follow new artistic & cultural projects allowing artists of the field of the contemporary creation to develop artistic works in connection with the territorial problems. We think that exchanges crossing the glances of professionals, volunteers, artists, elected people & citizens will allow to enrich the practice of each of the actors. By the definition of a typology of actions, the railings of common analyses, an analysis of the effects produced by actions we will try to define a common base and to find tracks of cooperation.

We’ve been working for 10 years on the conception & organization of artistic residencies in territories, inviting artists to engage processes of creation, developing their own perception of the territory while creating the conditions of meeting the inhabitants. Nowadays in rural areas there are many cultural initiatives which, because of the specificity of their setting-up, develop very innovative projects due to their approach of the territory & of the inhabitants. Unlike the urban projects, these initiatives often suffer on one hand from a strong isolation, because of their geographical situation & on the other hand due to the big variety of represents a gap in exchanges & the transmission of good practices.

• Capitalize the experiments from the practices of each around artists' presence on rural Territories; • Analyze impacts of this artistic presence towards the development of the rural territories; • Impulse the appropriation of participative practices with an actors' wide range; • Envisage forward possible kind of cooperation between our organisations. Professionals, associative volunteers, artists, elected people citizens engaged in projects with artists in rural areas because it turns out today that artists' presences in territories concern a very wide public of citizens involved in a different way in these projects. Indeed the participative processes dealing with these artistic presences are multi-form and put the inhabitants at the heart of the projects not only in direct meetings with artists (via events, workshops etc) but also in the accompaniment of artists’ projects (loan of place, welcome of works, voluntary implication in the organization of cultural events, participation to the conception, etc )The target public will consist of all actors who have an important role in the welcome and accompaniment of artists.
