New approaches to sustainable upland farming
Switch from imported protein for animal feed and expensive fossil fuel energy to home grown protein and locally produced renewable energy (hydro, wind, biofuel PV). Switch from commodity meat production for supermarkets to locally produced meat food products taking more of the value chain locally.
The Northumberland Uplands covers the upland areas of the county of Northumberland. It covers some 30,000 sq km (including 1,000 sq km of the Northumberland National Park) and has a population of some 33,000 people, giving a population density of 11 per sq km which is sparse for the UK. NULAG’s overall goal is to build on opportunities and address key rural issues, promoting sustainable growth by addressing all four of its elements, namely economic performance, community development, environmental enhancement and equality.
