Development of Ostrich Breeding Farm
Summary
A farm at the Järva county, had only 4 ostriches in 2002. EAFRD funds supported two young farmers build a new barn used among other for the incubation of chicks. Currently the farm has 30 ostriches.
Background
The farm started breeding ostriches in 2002 with only 4 ostriches. Currently there are 30 ostriches at the farm and the goal is to increase their number to 100 ostriches. Presently the farm produces ostrich eggs, but meat production is also envisaged. In addition to ostriches in the farm there are also emu, rheas, peacock and parrots. The annual output of the farm is 300-400 eggs.Ostrich eggs, feathers, skin and bones are made into handcrafts, sold at the market located in the farm.
Objective
The main objective was provide the opportunities for the incubation of chicks which would lead to the increase of the number of ostriches at the farm.
Main activities
The building of a new new barn was the main project activity.
Results & Benefits
A new barn has been completed providing thus providing more possibilities for the increase of the number of ostriches being bred at the farm. The ostrich farm attracts tourists and cooperates closely with a dairy museum and the Imavere pub that are situated close to the farm. As a result of increased visits to the area, the ostrich farm contributes to improved quality of life in the local community.
Lessons learnt
Starting "small" and then gradually increasing the size of the business is safer and more conducive to success. Learning from others and cooperation is of great importance.
