Enhancement of Fruit Distillery Brings Value Added to Heritage-Listed Farmyard
Summary
The Casa Culina manufactory, a fruit distillery, is one of several businesses set up in the reconstructed Pollandhof, a national heritage listed farmyard. Main product is fruit liqueur produced from traditional scattered orchards.
Background
The national heritage listed farmyard called ‘Pollandhof’ dates back to around 1800. In this outstanding building complex - a four-sided farmyard - three businesses were established which, among others, produce organic products and artisanal handicrafts. One of the established businesses is the fruit distillery "Casa Culina" existing since 2004. Its main product is fruit liqueurs for which it mainly uses purchased fruit distillates.
Objective
The objectives of the project were: i) the preservation of the national heritage listed four-sided farmyard; ii) securing existing jobs and creating new ones; iii) switching production of fruit liqueurs from purchased to self-produced distillates and through this, maintaining the local scattered fruit orchards.
Main activities
The project was split into 3 sub-projects through which the following activities were financed: 1) the purchase of machinery and equipment for the setting-up of the fruit distillery; 2) the reconstruction of the farm building to host the distillery; 3) the modernisation of the manor house including windows, doors and front facade. In addition (and not part of the project) the fruit distillery is converting to organic production.
Results & Benefits
The conversion achieved its scope of preserving the listed four-sided farmyard and saving existing jobs while providing new employement opportunities in a structurally weak area. The ‘Pollandhof’ has already become a new attraction for tourists. Production-wise the increased volume of processed fruit helps to preserve the traditional orchards in the long run. Besides the fact of using regional fruits, additional effort could be put in place in order to improve the quality of the products.
Lessons learnt
The project benefitted from the cooperation between the different businesses set up at the Pollandhof. Together these developed into a site of touristic interest in an otherwise structurally weak region. This is closely linked with the use of the manor house as museum, guest house and for catering events.
