A new initiative in Italy allows families having food delivered at home by local producers to buy food for families in need. Fruits, vegetables, flour, cheese and other food - all produced locally - can be paid for by the customers, and the local producers will deliver directly to disadvantaged families identified by local municipalities.
The initiative is called 'Spesa sospesa', echoing the old habit of paying for an extra coffee that the barista will give to someone who cannot afford it. The initiative aims to support both families in need and local food producers, among the most affected by the COVID-19 crisis.
'Spesa sospesa' is part of Campagna Amica, an initiative of Coldiretti, the federation of Italian farmers and agricultural producers.
