mountain.TRIP

Project period: December 2009 to November 2011

Project summary: The goal of mountain.TRIP is to provide stakeholders, end-users and practitioners with readily accessible and understandable forms of research-based information relevant to sustainable development in mountain regions. The mountain.TRIP initiative screened and mapped around 70 research projects (in a projects database) related to sustainable development in mountain areas from 1998 onwards, within six themes:

  1. climate change & energy;
  2. land management, agriculture, forestry, & land use;
  3. water resources, water management & natural hazards;
  4. economy, information technology, transport & infrastructure;
  5. regional developments (social systems, political systems & cultural heritage);
  6. biodiversity, nature conservation, ecosystem functions & sustainable tourism.

It has also developed other tools to help connect research with end users. And a set of recommendations for improving the commissioning of research related to mountain areas and dissemination of the results.

Role and priorities/objectives in knowledge transfer & innovation: The goal was to provide stakeholders, end-users and practitioners with readily accessible and understandable forms of research-based information relevant to sustainable development in mountain regions. It aimed to translate research findings into useful information and develop relationships between users and researchers. The purpose was to help transform research into practice.

Results and recommendations:

The main outputs are:

  1. approximately 70 mapped projects related to mountain research with details made available through this portal on the mountain.TRIP website;
  2. reports and other documentation on work packages;
  3. a set of web-based information and knowledge related communications tools for disseminating the outputs and results of the project including:
    1. a set of brochures on mountain food production as prototypes of communication products;
    2. a video on producing and marketing food through a mountain cooperative;
    3. A screenshot tutorial for the DIAMONT database with indicators and instruments of sustainable regional development in the Alps; an example set of posters for a travelling exhibition "Olive farming in Andalusia"
    4. four “Science sells” videos showing a non-standard use of video and animation techniques to communicate research projects and their results;
    5. a strategy for social media for organisations; and vi) a toolkit is for organizers of mountain food workshops.
