World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)

Introduction

WWF is one of the world’s largest and most respected independent conservation organisations with over 5 million supporters and a global network active in over 100 countries.

Within the context of the Common Agricultural Policy the organization is working towards a European agricultural sector that preserves the natural environment and builds a long-term future in which farmers live in balance with nature, by conserving biological diversity, maintaining good land and water management and helping to fight climate change.

Structure, key stakeholders and partners

WWF European Policy Office was founded in Brussels in 1989. WWF European Policy Office cooperates with other NGOs and is part of the ‘Green 10’ (a href="www.green10.org" target="_blank" title="Green 10">www.green10.org), an informal coalition of the ten leading environmental NGOs which are active at EU level. The ‘Green 10’ works with the EU institutions to ensure environmental issues are central to policy-making.

WWF European Policy Office focuses on climate and energy policies including (Emissions Trading Scheme, energy efficiency, and energy supply), fisheries (Common Fisheries Policy reform) the EU budget reform, biodiversity forest and freshwater protection as well as the impact of the EU’s development and external relations on the environment.

Priorities and activities

WWF takes an innovative, collaborative, science-based approach to achieve its twin goals of saving biodiversity and reducing humanity's impact on nature.

WWF's policy work is based on: research, the provision of informed and accurate technical advice, policy formulation, relationship building, and engagement, lobbying and campaigning.

The organisation’s vision for the Common Agricultural Policy is for a greening of Pillar I and a Pillar II, which has the capacity to protect the environment through rural development. To make it real, WWF works together with citizens, farmers, the European Union, national governments and regional authorities.
