Family farming in Europe, through the eyes of five photographers November 2013

The United Nations has declared 2014 the International Year of Family Farming. Led by the Food and Agriculture Organization, the goal is to raise the profile of family farming by focusing world attention on its role in alleviating hunger and poverty, providing food security and improving livelihoods, while protecting the environment and biodiversity.
In Europe, the European Commission is marking its support for this global initiative with a conference on Family farming: A dialogue towards more sustainable and resilient farming in Europe and the world to take place in Brussels on 29 November 2013.
The Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development, with the support of the European Network for Rural Development, has organized a photo exhibition to accompany the conference which illustrates the diversity of European agriculture. Five photographers have recorded the experience of five families in Portugal, Greece, Ireland, Romania and Scotland. All are involved in EU funded rural development projects. All – like family farms of all sizes everywhere – look to survive and thrive in the context of globalisation and a changing world.
The portraits of these families are not intended to provide a comprehensive picture of family farming as it is practiced in Europe today; rather the intention is simply to provide a flavour – and a distinctly European one at that - of the diversity of Europe’s family farming sector…

Images of Rural Europe, an ENRD photo competition promoted by Local Action Groups, aims to celebrate the beauty and diversity of Rural Europe with a collection of photos covering a variety of rural development themes. Over 1 700 submissions from 25 EU Member States were reviewed by a panel representing Local Action Groups, National Rural Networks, and the Contact Point of the European Network for Rural Development and the Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development.
