Rural Young People and Music (From Secret 'Nerds' to Visible Artists)

Summary

Innovative use of measure 321 (Basic services for the economy and rural population) in Denmark to help the Tøender Music School establish a state-of-the-art multi-media workshop for local young artists and musicians

Background

Tøender Municipality in Denmark already has many good leisure activities for children and young people. However, young people live in a rapidly changing culture and new leisure trends and opportunities are emerging all the time and Tøender Municipality aims to respond to these new trends with new activities for young people, including those from immigrant families. The project applicant in this case is Tøender Music School.

Objective

The objective is to establish a multimedia workshop for all young people in Tøender Municipality who are interested in being able to use the latest electronic opportunities. Diversity of culture is viewed as an important factor for people choosing to settle in Tøender and the workshop project is one action to encourage greater interest and representation in Danish music and culture schools.

Main activities

Tøender Municipal Music School hosts the multimedia workshop and co-ordinates and organises all related activities. The programme of workshop activities is advertised to young people on the Tøender Municipality website and the music school's own website. This is supported with information packs being sent to schools and other culture institutions, as well as press releases, posters, making contact for sleeves, bands etc.

Results & Benefits

The pupils at the school and young people "outside" the school have integrated in various ways and they have all worked on an equal footing at the workshop based on their own personal approaches and interests. At the same time they have also interacted with each other on joint projects and learning. The groups have consisted of everyone from talented music students in Denmark to refugees from Kenya.

Lessons learnt

The music part alone has both worked with the computer as a form of study (a music technology approach) and as a form of equipment for recording music (with music as the focal point). A large number of the other activities run at the culture school have also been launched as a very open project.
