Background

The project responded to the lack of opportunities for young people in the rurally isolated area of Eksdale. It built on the successes of a previous initiative that provided a place for young people to meet.

Objective

The overall aim of the project was to introduce and deliver new and targeted youth activities in Eskdale. More specifically, to realise their personal and social development enabling them to gain a voice and place in society; to encourage them to become active citizens by increasing their community involvement; to create informal educational opportunities; to improve their access to information and services; to promote volunteering.

Main activities

The Langholm Youth and Community Project appointed a Youth Development manager to oversee the delivery of the project. The project involved the set up of a new Youth Information Centre where young people can come together and discuss their problems and ideas and the introduction of an Xcel Volunteer Database, a platform which allows them to have a voice in the community.

Results & Benefits

Young people now have a comfortable place they consider their own. Alongside the Youth Information Centre, the project has encouraged and assisted new groups to meet, giving them the confidence to take their ideas forward. It has significantly imrpoved the lives of young people in Eksdale, offering advice, support and a platform for them to get involved in the community. Young people have taken greater sense of achievement and ownership from their involvement.

Lessons learnt

Working in partnership with other organisations was fundamental for making the project work. Building up good contacts and obtaining as much information as possible about what you want to do is also essential both for the preparation and the implementation of the project. It was vital that young people themselves have been at the heart of the project inception and implementation to instil dynamism in the area.
